I carved it into a bird shape.  I think it looks like a bluebird.  The spalted grain of the wood is really remarkable. I ship using USPS Ground, which is the least expensive option that included a tracking number.  If you prefer Priority Mail or another shipping option, international shipping or would like to combine shipping on multiple items to save a little money, please email me at judson@judsoncarroll.com This is my last large piece of spalted Birch for the season, and I was very pleased to make a ladle.  You never know what you will find once you cut into a piece of spalted wood - it is really a gamble.  Sometimes you carve for 2-3 hours, hit a weak spot and the whole thing has to be thrown away.  This one turned out great though, it is solid and strong! Ladles are made from the section of a tree where a sturdy branch emerges.  The handle of the ladle comes from the branch, while the bowl is from the main trunk.  This results in a beautiful grain pattern.
