Cawl Spoon #3
The Cawl Spoon is a traditional Welsh design. It can be used as either a cooking or eating spoon.
There is a reason spoons like this have been carved and used since before the Roman Empire. The lines of the handle and the shape of the bowl are elegantly simple, but it takes a lot of practice and skill to carve them just right - the selection of wood is also very important to ensure a strong, smooth spoon that really feels right in the hand and the mouth.
It is sealed with walnut oil, comfortable and ready to use. I think the "crank" on this one is particularly nice - that is the upturn of the handle that contrasts to the angle of the bowl.
As always, my woodwork is sustainably sourced from trees that are storm damaged or that must be thinned. Each piece is entirely hand made in the ancient greenwood tradition. I use only a hand saw, a small axe and knives. Each piece comes with a handwritten, numbered and signed document. These are heirloom quality spoons that, if properly cared for, will last for generations.
