Spalted Birch Ladle

Price $40 with free shipping in the continental US.

I ship using USPS Ground, which is the least expensive option that included a tracking number.  If you prefer Priority Mail or another shipping option, international shipping or would like to combine shipping on multiple items to save a little money, please email me at judson@judsoncarroll.com

This is my last large piece of spalted Birch for the season, and I was very pleased to make a ladle.  You never know what you will find once you cut into a piece of spalted wood - it is really a gamble.  Sometimes you carve for 2-3 hours, hit a weak spot and the whole thing has to be thrown away.  This one turned out great though, it is solid and strong!

Ladles are made from the section of a tree where a sturdy branch emerges.  The handle of the ladle comes from the branch, while the bowl is from the main trunk.  This results in a beautiful grain pattern.

Ladles are difficult to carve, but well worth the effort.  I have a couple of small pieces of spalted Birch left that I may be able to turn into coffee scoops... I'll find out later this week as I cut into them... stay tuned!

I think whoever buys this will enjoy using it.  As always, my woodwork is sustainably sourced from trees that are storm damaged or that must be thinned. Each piece is entirely hand made in the ancient greenwood tradition. I use only a hand saw, a small axe and knives. These are heirloom quality spoons that, if properly cared for, will last for generations.
