Without the spalting, you could barely see it. As the turkey tail mushroom colonizes a tree, it caramelizes the sugars int he wood. This is what gives spalted wood such striking colors. I was especially impressed by the way the grain seems to spiral around the handle. What makes carving spalted wood so interesting is that you never know what you will find once you split a log.
