I was especially impressed by the way the grain seems to spiral around the handle. What makes carving spalted wood so interesting is that you never know what you will find once you split a log.  It may be anything from just lightly colored to wild, almost tie-dyed, type patterns like this! When I sawed off this piece of American Holly from the tree, I found that it had a unique natural curve.  As I held it in my hand, I could envision a serving spoon.
