This is another original design.  Okay, what do I mean by that?  Well, I don't actually sketch anything out before I start carving.  I have an idea in my mind of the general dimensions, then I just follow the lines, shape and grain pattern of the wood.

When I sawed off this piece of American Holly from the tree, I found that it had a unique natural curve.  As I held it in my hand, I could envision a serving spoon.

I tried to enhance the curve as I axed out the rough shape.  Then, I just let my knife follow the lines of the wood.  It turned out to be a very attractive design and it feels particularly good in the hand.  I bake the holly spoons so that the color will show the tight, satiny grain.  This also gives them the wood the light, hard, smooth feel of mahogany.

I think whoever buys this this will enjoy using it.  As always, my woodwork is sustainably sourced from trees that are storm damaged or that must be thinned. Each piece is entirely hand made in the ancient greenwood tradition. I use only a hand saw, a small axe and knives. These are heirloom quality spoons that, if properly cared for, will last for generations.
