Lately, I have been working through a small amount of spalted Birch.  Spalting is a unique color pattern that occurs when turkey tail and other mushrooms begin to colonize the wood.  Sometimes, it is deeply spalte.  This section just has a bit of light spalting ont he spoon, but the turkey tails gave the wood a beautiful, almost caramelized color.

This is a very pretty cooking set that is comfortable int he hand.  No two spalted sets are the same.

In order to carve a spalted set that matches, I have to choose a section of wood by eye that I think will be suitable.  Then, I split the log so that each piece of the set comes from the same piece of wood, facing each other.

I think whoever buys this these will enjoy using them.  As always, my woodwork is sustainably sourced from trees that are storm damaged or that must be thinned. Each piece is entirely hand made in the ancient greenwood tradition. I use only a hand saw, a small axe and knives. These are heirloom quality spoons that, if properly cared for, will last for generations.
